Such a nice and innocent statement, how is it possible to get a FILE NAME ERROR here???

I think it is the trailing blanks in the file names that causes the FILE NAME ERROR. This looks like a v12.1 bug, it works in v11.0(!).

Yup, this is a bug in the 12.1 Unicode version. Now logged:
5518: Unicode versions do not ignore trailing blanks in native file names.
It will be fixed shortly, thanks.

Yeah, thanks - I've just seen it in the latest mail. So, should I eliminate my 'delete-trailing-blanks'-dfn from the statement or - for full correctness - leave it in? Ah, questions over questions... ;)

So long as everyone who will be using your application has installed the fix, then I would advise removing your delete-trailing-blanks code.
