Concern about installing Dyalog on WIN10 with OneDrive

Postby woody on Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:18 pm

Greetings.

Here's a follow-up post on the subject of DyalogAPL install on a PC with Windows 10 and O365 ONEDRIVE installed and configured.

Could there be a conflict between DyalogAPL normal installation ... And the placement of Dyalog folder and files on the WIN10 (documents, desktop folders?).

When a user gets a new WIN10 OS ... it comes bundled with ONEDRIVE and a "free trial" O365 account. The new WIN10 "boot-up configuration prompts" ask the user if they want to enable ONEDRIVE.

I believe that the ONEDRIVE client-side tool actually modifies Windows Permissions on several folders ... so it can CLONE and MANAGE syncing between the user's PC and O365 cloud.

I'm thinking that by DEFAULT ... ONEDRIVE will try to "OWN" the Desktop and Documents folders ... changing security permissions ... and CLONING these folders where ONEDRIVE can keep everything "IN SYNC".

QUESTION1:
Are there any considerations or precautions that APLers should keep in mind when installing DyalogAPL on a WIN10 OS that has ONEDRIVE configured?

See this BLOG:

Does Dyalog APL put anything (like log or session files) under the Documents or Desktop folders?

QUESTION2:
Is there any advantage for installing DyalogAPL on a new folder C:\Dyalog
Rather than the default path C:\Program Files\Dyalog ?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Woody,

If the OneDrive affects standard Windows folders such as the User Documents folders, I think that you may need to ask Dyalog to look for certain files in a folder of your choice.

1) Set the UCMDCACHEFILE setting for the user command cache file
2) Set the various session file and log file settings in Options|Configure
3) Change the current directory that Dyalog usually starts in. For more details you can look at this webpage: https://forums.dyalog.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=565

There are more details about the first 2 in our Dyalog for Microsoft Windows Installation and Configuration Guide and in our User Commands User Guide.

Hi Woody,

Installing in your own directory C:\dyalog\ gives you have full control of it. You can directly write to this directory as a normal user.

You might want that or not.

Directories under C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\ are protected by the Windows operating system's UAC security. To write to a directory in such a location, you typically need to right click on an executable and choose "Run as Administrator". It is inconvenient, but these measures are there to protect you.
