Dyalog under OS Catalina

Postby shallit on Tue Nov 19, 2019 12:48 pm

Has there been any progress on notarizing Dyalog with Apple so it will run OK under OS Catalina,
as discussed in

viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1563

?

I apologize for the lack of replies - but pls. don't take that as inactivity on our side. We're working on it, some progress has been made, but unfortunately it's not ready yet...

Is there a chance that Dyalog and Catalina (or its successor) will come to terms before the next presidential election in the US?

Does the problem lay with Catalina? Cicero had already pointed the finger on it:
"Quo usque tandem abutere, Catalina, patientia nostra ? Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet ? "

May I quote shallit ? "How come no one at Dyalog has answered this ?"

Dyalog doesn't answer any question in this matter. Is it a new policy of Dyalog to ignore users working in an Apple environnement?

I presume this is related to the issue raised above:

“mac_64_18.0.38525_unicode.pkg” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.

[Under Catalina 10.15.4 on a 2020 Macbook Air]

I overrode the restriction, but this is not ideal practice for a general distribution IMHO.

Apologies for our silence on this matter, the root cause is confusion about why this seems to work fine on half the machines we have with Catalina installed, fails on others but can be enabled by changing security settings, and can't even be installed with changed security settings on one of our macBooks. Fortunately, the work-around described at https://www.fireebok.com/resource/how-to-fix-that-app-can-not-open-on-macos-catalina.html did work for that machine.

Apple made a number of security "enhancements" in Catalina, some of which were subsequently (at least temporarily) rolled back. It has not been an easy task to understand how to create properly supported installation images.

Now that v18.0 is wrapped up (except for this and a few other small issues), we shall be investigating it with renewed energy and hopefully have good news for Mac users soon.

A quick update:

We have now notarized Dyalog APL versions 17.1 and 18.0 for macOS and uploaded the resulting installation images to the download area of our website (https://www.dyalog.com/download-zone.htm). This should mean that Dyalog APL should now install without issue .. if it doesn't let us know.

Please note that the first time that you attempt to access certain directories from within Dyalog the operating system will prompt you to allow Dyalog to access those directories - this behaviour is imposed by the operating system itself. You can alter your choice in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Files and Folders and Full Disk Access.
